One of the top searches that have led to my blog this past week was “what is uwi medical school like?”. I Googled the phrase myself and my post opining medical school was the third search result on the page, after the official UWI websites. Third, you guys.
So, what is UWI med school like?
The forum members who keep asking the question tend to be asking about three different things:
- How different is it from American medical schools, or offshore universities?
- How qualified will you be when you leave?
- Does it prepare you for the USMLEs?
The medical school at the University of the West Indies, Mona is only one of three whose other campuses are at Cave Hill in Barbados and St. Augustine in Trinidad. As far as I’ve ever heard, the Mona medical programme is the best of the lot. Similarly, Trinidad excels at engineering and Barbados at law.
Our MB;BS programme awards you a Bachelor in Medicine and a Bachelor in Surgery and it’s 5 years long. The first 2-2.5 years are pre-clinical and scientifically oriented but the remainder are strongly clinically based. From what I’ve seen and heard, American universities tend to gloss over the clinical aspects of medicine in an effort to make their students pass board exams. In the West Indies, licensing requirements vary by country and many graduates may not even end up practicing in the Caribbean. What the UWI does is provide a strong clinical foundation from which a good physician will be able to practice medicine competently, with much less emphasis on just passing exams.
In terms of admission, our matriculation requirements are still based on the UK system of A levels – C.A.P.E. – where standardized exam grades are used to determine your acceptance. They do take GPAs into consideration with the completion of a first degree or an Associate’s but not everyone who applies have these. Class sizes are quite big, and the trend for the last few years was that students from countries that contributed to the UWI would find it fairly easy to get in (for a myriad of economically related reasons). For the most part they’ve stopped that, but the class of 2015 still boasts 300+ students. This number keeps on climbing.
When you graduate the UWI, you will have earned the title M.D. and you will have a dual degree in Medicine and Surgery. This qualifies you to practice pretty much anywhere in the Caribbean, at least for your intern year. After that you sit a licensing exam to be able to practice in the country of your choice. Several med students prepare for the USMLEs in their own time to widen their opportunities and this is actually encouraged. But our curriculum is not particularly geared towards sitting that exam.
This is how it all works in theory. From a real-life standpoint, I find much to complain about in the didactic teaching regime of the first two years. They seem to be training us to sit and pass exams rather than retain this information for any kind of clinical application. In their defence, most of the doctors treat us like we’re starting from scratch once we begin our junior clinical rotations in third year and they don’t expect us to know anything except the basics. Medicine is an apprenticeship, they keep telling us, just get through the first two years and you’ll be fine.
From my biased point of view, I have grown rather fond of the medical programme, particularly the one at the UWI Mona-Western Jamaica Campus which I was very sorry to leave. I greatly respect the emphasis on clinical ability rather than “book-learning” that is displayed by almost every doctor we come in contact with. I firmly believe that this kind of training makes you a much more competent, capable physician because by the time you graduate you will have more or less been practising medicine for three years already.
And that’s what medical school here at UWI Mona boils down to: clinical expertise.

No UHWI trained doctor is worthless. How you interact with them boils down to their social training and ability to interact with people. I assure you the clinical exams were up to the last decade internationally accredited and a UHWI trained doctor can work now in Australia, the Caribbean , Singapore and Canada without doing a board exam. That is a pretty solid position to be in #ProudPelican .

I’m glad to hear! I wasn’t referring to doctors, but graduates from other faculties. UWI, it is said, tends to produce graduates who have book knowledge, but little practical experience… That’s just what I hear, though.

I am Jamaican and have been living in the US for the past 17 years. I am considering applying to UWI Mona for medical school as the program is both exceptional and affordable, in light of the exorbitant and rising costs to study medicine in the US. Do you think this is a wise choice?

Not entirely, but the UWI campus is a fairly safe place and as long as you keep your wits about you you should be fine.

That all depends on where you live. There are definitely some communities that are more safe based on the type of residents. The Lodgings Office would be much better able to guide you than I could.

Suzanne, it can be more costly. I am a Jamaica american who was in your same position. thought it would be cheaper but its costing me way more and there is not much help here financially. The school basically charged me as an international student, did not get the sponsorship from the government despite I had the grades.

Sonya thank you ever so much for responding with that bit of information. My attendance, if accepted, is contingent on being able to pay the subsidized tuition rate. If not, as you mentioned, it would not be worth it financially to attend. Instead my plan is to apply to a one year post-bacclaurate/masters in medical science program since I have been out of college for a while and then attend medical school in the US. So that I understand why they deemed you an international student, could you tell me a little bit about your background. How old were you when you migrated to the US? Did you attend high school in Jamaica and sit for CXC?

I applied to Uwimona Medicine faculty for 2014-15 and I got a response from Science and tech. Faculty. accepting me. to that Faculty , even thought I didn’t apply to them. My friend who got accepted last year said that when she applied she got acceptance from Science and Tech Faculty at 1st and even when to that faculty’s orientation but soon after got a letter from medicine accepting her. Can you say if you got accepted in the same manner? I am just wondering if this is the norm.

No, I was accepted straight into medicine. However the acceptance letters from that faculty (med sci) are released fairly late in comparison to other faculties.
I wouldn’t say it was the norm. More than likely you and your friend must have had selected Science and Technology as your second choice when applying for degree programmes which is why you would have gotten acceptance from them.
Other offers from the faculty of medicine include being deferred for a year, or getting full-fee paying status.
You may get your acceptance letter soon; SciTech tends to reply earlier than medicine. Don’t worry too much yet.

Based on what present med students have told me, that’s the norm. Only persons who do really well in their first year of sitting CAPE will get an early conditional acceptance letter however, many persons receive their acceptance letter in mid-late august after results have been published for year 2 exams (usually unit 2s).

There is a new medical school in black river,st elizabeth, jamaica. The program is US based and good. Students got high grades on USMLE exams. They were all over the caribbean news

Robyn how does UWI determine who is a sponsored versus non-sponsored student? How much does a non-sponsored student pay for medical school tuition, 20%, 50% or 100%?

Sponsored students hail from UWI contributing countries, a list of which can usually be found on their website (mostly Caribbean islands).
Non-sponsored students are usually subject to full tuition costs, but a breakdown can also be found on the UWI’s website.

FMS is usually the last faculty to advise students. Usually around early to mid August is when you’ll find out for sure.

Hi Robyn! I was wondering if you could tell me whether or not any students from UWI pursued a double major i.e. worked for the MBBS degree whilst doing a degree in another faculty e.g. Science and Technology. Thank you!

Wow, that sounds like a full plate. I don’t really know of anyone doing that. Most people transfer fully from SciTech to MBBS and drop the first programme. I’ll ask and let you know what kind of responses I get.

Based on the schedule on the MBBS school year, I don’t see how that would be feasible. Perhaps if the second degree was from a faculty that offered mostly evening classes it would be able to work? But most of the time the MBBS programme (between studying and being at the hospital) precludes any other involvement.

Good day I am currently doing CAPE unit 1 exams and is hoping to get into medicine or dentistry respectively for this coming year 2015. I am doing 5 A levels(Carib. Stds.,Bio.,Chem.,Law.,Pure Math.,) but is not too keen on one which is pure math do you think my acceptance will be jeapordized although they stated that only Biology and Chemistry is compulsary at A level and and a social science (Law) can be used?

I’m really not the best person to answer your question; you should contact the Faculty directly for a more authoritative opinion.
I know our medical schools prefer students with a strong science background, but they also give weight to co-curricular activity involvement and evidence of strengths outside of pure academics. Doing Law in CAPE won’t hurt your chances but dropping a science subject like Math might.
I highly recommend that you talk to someone with a little more experience than men, though. Best of luck!

The Office of Student Financing offers several scholarships, grants and bursaries that are usually open for anyone to apply. The UWI also offers various bursaries that pay up to 50% of the cost of tuition for medical students. You can also approach other loan institutions. Banks like to offer education loans, for one.

Is there a major difference between medical students which were accepted with CAPE subjects and students which has a degree? Interms of academic performance, number of courses compulsory,or even preference.

Based on my class I wouldn’t say I see a clear preference. There are a lot of people straight out of high school with only CAPE subjects and a lot of people who did a first degree before.
Academic performance carries a lot of weight and I’ve heard that the more courses/subjects you successfully complete the better your chances are. But that’s just hearsay.

I am currently sitting unit 1: Chemistry, Biology, Physics,and Communication Studies. Coming September if God’s willing i will be pursuing Both units of Pure Math and Caribbean Studies. Does doing Math increases my chance of acceptance significantly? And in reference to my level of passage in both units, do i have to obtain all ones to consider an opportunity of acceptance?

Frankly, if you really want to do medicine you should apply no matter what your grades are like. Most people apply to the Faculty of Science and Technology as a back up because it facilitates a smooth transition into MBBS as well.
But since grades are the first thing they consider, scoring all 1s in CAPE would certainly get you over that first hurdle.
Math and Physics are weighted similarly. I don’t know if Math will significantly increase your chances, but it won’t hurt them.

It really doesn’t matter whether you do Maths or Physics, all you need is Bio and Chem. The third subject can be anything; they are all weighted the same.

I am very grateful for your Robyn! I don’t fully apprehend the so called ‘Best degrees’ or courses; to improve admission chances. For example, i was told that the best degree to pursue is Biochemistry. Or all degrees withing the faculty provides equal chance of acceptance but is based from the class of degree acquired?

I’m really not sure of the details. Biochemistry would definitely help your understanding of the foundation courses of medicine but I don’t know how they weight qualifications in the admissions process.

I actually had to write out a budget earlier this year and I think it came up to about 1.1 million JMD (give or take a couple hundred thousand). But I live on the frugal side of life. Housing and tuition alone is 800K (again Jamaican dollars). Aside from those baseline costs, the rest is up to you.

I am going in second year and I work in the libraries 2 nights a week and thinking about getting a job in the bookstore. Is it possible to maintain these jobs when starting clincial years?

I have a friend who worked in the library for his first two years, but he stopped when he started clinicals. I also know of people who have part-time jobs away from campus that they are able to maintain during the clinical years.
What you choose to do is up to you and it depends on how you plan to manage your time and what you’re willing to sacrifice. Just know that the school hours for clinical years are a lot less predictable and tend to run far later than you’re used to in pre-clin. And that doesn’t include study time.

The Faculty of Medicine is usually one of the last faculties to send out their acceptance letters but they are usually out sometime in July.
If you’re especially concerned you could probably call the faculty and check whether they’ve sent them out as yet.

The point is this: some people do find out earlier than others, but I think that’s as much to do with the timing of your application as all the other weighting factors ASIDE from grades that they take into consideration.
But I’m really not in the position to be giving you absolute advice. I hope everything works out in your favour.

To be honest, I only applied for Medicine so I had no other choices to wait on. I think each choice is processed separately by each faculty so it depends on the different administrations as well as the volume of applications.

Hi there, I am a pre science student. I skipped cape. Besides that, at Trinidad’s campus there’s little to no information on the previously exposed point system fo acceptance. If possible can you please tell me about the point system in you year?

I’m not clear on the details (sorry) but I do know that they weighed academic performance with co-curricular activity. I wish I could be more specific, but I really don’t know.

I would strongly recommend you keep trying different avenues; UWI is not known for their communication skills. Have you tried calling the Faculty of Medicine directly to see whether they have sent out letters of acceptance?
Now is when they usually release them but I would have expected a letter of denial if that was the case. Phone the Faculty to be sure.

Do not be disheartened that you have not yet received a response. In the event that you do not gain acceptance this year use the time to acquire hospital volunteer or research experience if you haven’t already done so to help bolster your application. I wish you all the best and the key is to never give up.

I love your blog. I have 2 grade twos and the rest ones. Do you think the 2s in chemistry harm my chances of getting into medicine at UWI? I have heard if persons having 3 ones and 3 twos and getting in but i am not sure.

The grade IIs won’t harm your chances *that* much – remember that a II is still a distinction in CAPE. Those are pretty good grades.
Academic competition is stiff, but they also put a good amount of weight on co-curricular involvement and leadership activities, so there’s a good chance of you getting in.

My Unit 1 result : 2 in Biology, 2 in Chemistry, 2 in Com studies, 3 in Physics and 3 in Pure Math. So i guess my chance of admission is very slim or impossible from the get go. Can Unit 2 make a big difference, if i get 1 in Biology and Chemistry? Or it will be too little to late?

I was granted admission this year to the MBBS program. I took 8 subjects including Biology, Chemistry and Physics years ago when it was known as CXC not CAPE and received all I. In addition, I have a Bachelors in Biology, years of neuroscience research experience with publications and volunteered bedside in an orthopedic operating room. Perseverance is key when pursuing your dream. All hope is never lost if you want it bad enough and are willing to commit yourself. If you do not gain admission this year, I would advise that you take science courses at the college level for a year or so while you reapply and ensure that you get As. I wish you all the best.

Hey Jamerican, CXC and CAPE are different exams. We still call CSEC (the high school exam) CXC sometimes, whereas CAPE is the sixth form/Associate Degree level exam.
But your advice about pursuing science courses at the university is excellent. :)

Hello, I’m quite worried about my future. I have just done my CSEC exams, where I got eight ones and four distinctions. But that is the problem, I only got FOUR distinctions, not 8. I got distinctions in Physics, Math, English B and O.A. Should I be worried. Does distinctions really matter in my acceptance to med. school?

Really, CSEC doesn’t matter nearly as much as your CAPE grades. Distinctions in CAPE do matter, so just work hard and do your best. :)

I must say, Robyn, I love the fact that you are so busy yet you find time to help us who want to pursue our dreams. A million thanks. I have heard that the offers are done based on a points system. Grade ones are awarded 5 points and grade twos are awarded four points and since 3 double unit courses are required, that means a maximum of 30. I also heard that the minimum is 24 for acceptance. I have 28 points if this is the fact…I also have voluntary hours, and have held many positions of leadership. I can only continue praying and hope that soon I will see an offer of acceptance. I have only been accepted to FPAS. If I do not get an offer, would you recommend calling the dean of FMS? or admissions (for the one millionth time!)?

You’re very welcome Carlos. I see no reason why you cannot. From earlier posts on this blog, I have gathered that this is often done by students. I am almost twice as old as the average 18 year old student studying medicine at UWI so trust me when I say that if becoming a doctor is your true calling, you will never rest until you have answered that call.

Sometimes, too, you may be offered a space in the next batch instead of the upcoming one.
And to add to what Jamerican said, there are quite a few mature students in my class who’ve though the time was right for a career change. No worries about that!

Correct me if i am wrong but, i heard that only those who obtain a minimum requirment of 29 points gets the subsidy based on the 3 core subjects you do(carib and comm studies not included)…as for me i only obtained a miniscule amount of 27 points therefore i was unable to obtain the subsidy.Not sure if the wisest decision is to sit out a year and redo 2-3 subjects in order to get ‘ones’ instead of ‘twos’. Doing med with non-government subsidy fee is out of the question.

The reduced tuition rate without compromising education quality is one of the reasons why I applied to UWI. Here in the United States, the average tuition rate for medical school is a whopping $40K a year. The range can be anywhere from $20K to $75K yearly rendering it not uncommon for students to owe the exorbitant amounts of $300K to $500K upon completion when living expenses are factored in. Compounded with interest, paying that off is no easy feat.

Carlos there is also the option of accepting the option for The Science and Technology Faculty. Work really hard and attain a good gpa for semester one, apply for a transfer to MB,BS in January. You have to make sure you do really well though. CAPE resits are not done in January. Just something to consider

Yeah Leo i think i am going to do just that. Well my average is 86% but i tend to choke at the big moment, when everything matters; i am a choker just like Asafa. Since you guys are my idol; what am i missing, i tend to study from the syllabuses and not practice past papers. I am smart, but i don’t know how to prepare myself for an exam. How do you guys study? By practicing past papers? Or both past papers and syllabus? Or should i go to evening class? Help me please guys; especially Tahlia who got all distinctions.

The syllabus is important because you need to study the relevant information. However I would say that past papers are EXTREMELY important. I got past papers from years back and printed them and made them into a book. I did every single question because most often the questions are simply reworded. It works. For Bio last year, I found that time was running out on me and I hadnt started studying certain topics and I simply stopped reading and did only past papers. Simply reading your notes and from textbooks will not suffice as you may think you know the information but you have no idea how to apply it when answering a question. And lastly, i went on the cxc.org website and looked at the examiners’ comments for every year of the particular exam. It tells you exactly what examiners are looking for when answering and common mistakes made by candidates. I compared what the examiners said to how I answered the questions. I think i will be resitting too in order to get that subsidy,since i am clueless as to how i can pay that monsterous tuition fee by september 1. Though,i am not going to give up until the expiry date of the acceptance letter. I heard uwi offers 50% bursary fee,sadly, it’s still unpayable for me. Any ideas guys?

Hi. I was just wondering if Trinidadian students would also Gate funding if they do decide to attend medical school in Jamaica? I applied to Mona med this year and thankfully I was accepted however I deferred my acceptance in order to make some funds. My concern really is whether or not Trinidadian students will receive Gate funding if they attend medical school in another UWI?

As far as I know (so far I haven’t heard any different), if Trinidadian students get funding, they get it no matter which campus they study at.
However, I did hear some news that Trinidadian government would start cutting back on their funding. But Trinidadians would be in a better position to know than I would. :)

There are several older candidates in medical school, and I know two personally in my class. Your chances of success are not really affected by age. One disadvantage is that you tend to have more external responsibilities as you get older, but one advantage is that patients are more likely to trust a more mature looking person.

Hi, I am currently doing 1st year pure and applied and I am doing biochemistry, chemistry and Spanish. In high school, I did the IB program and I got a 6 in Biology, but 4’s in Chemistry and Economics HL. I spoke to the dean and he told me that I can carry my Biology grade with me to apply for Medicine and that I will have to get A’s in Chemistry and Biochemistry or Spanish. However, I forgot to ask him about my ‘O’ level grades. I got D’s in Chemistry and Physics for ‘O’ levels. Will this affect my chances of getting in? Please reply soon. Thanks!

Hi, I forgot to tell you in case you were wondering what IB is. It is an international exam where a 7 is the highest and below 4 is a fail. Since I got a 6, that is equivalent to a B or a 2 in both CAPE units 1 and 2, and a 4 is equivalent to a 4 in both CAPE units 1 and 2 or a D.

To be honest, I have no idea what the matriculation requirements for the School of Nursing are but you can easily find them online or by calling the University itself.

I believe you do, unless the practice has changed. But you can always confirm with the admissions dept (just make sure to get multiple confirmations if you hear conflicting answers)

Just a quick question. You mentioned some students take the USMLE on their own and I just wanted to know if students get competitive scores like 240s or 250s and do you have to go the Kaplan route to excel at the exams?

Honestly? I’ve no clue. I assume we get competitive scores because I see people migrating (and I assume they got jobs).
I don’t know if the Kaplan route helps or doesn’t, either. You could speak with Kaplan and see if they get a lot of medical students or you could talk to some more medical students. I don’t think Kaplan is a necessity to excel, but they can’t hurt, right?

I can’t tell you your chances (I wish I had that kind of information), but I can tell you what the Faculty considers when choosing applicants.
This link – http://bit.ly/1wTn5Bm – talks about matriculation requirements to the UWI MBBS if you have a 1st degree:
Persons holding degrees from Universities other than the UWI will also be considered provided that:
The University which granted the degree is recognized as competitive.
Credits have been obtained in Biology / Zoology and Chemistry
A minimum cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0 or its equivalent has been obtained.
Of course, there are general non-academic requirements like the 300 word autobiographical sketch and participation in extra-curricular activities (which is pretty well-weighted in the selection process).
Overall I’d say having a first degree gives you a competitive edge, but there is no guarantee of admission (not with the masses of people applying to medical school these days).

Hi Shaniel, a lot of students transfer after their first year of SciTech and quite a few also enter the MBBS programme after finishing their Bachelor’s.
Good grades are important but it would also help to talk to the UWI administration to see what else they might require.

That’s a tough one. There are scholarships and grants provided by UWI; some of them are academically based and some are based on other things. Very few of them cover all your tuition fees, however.
Banks and other lending institutions are always available but you’re going to need collateral. You just have to keep asking everyone about all the possible options and figure out what works best for you.

The SLB grants loans only to government sponsored students of contributing countries. If you are full-fee paying or half-fee paying (which is often the case in the Med Sci faculty) they will not offer you the loan. Good luck!

You would be applying for a faculty transfer which likely has to be approved. Start your first year in SciTech and talk to the administration about their specific requirements for a transfer to Med Sci, and see where that takes you. All the best!

Ok Shari. I applied in 2012 when I just left sixth form. In 2012 I chose MBBS my first choice but I got accepted in the faculty of science and technology. I deferred the acceptance because I was coming to the Us. Anyway, my request for deferral was granted for science and technology that is but I’ve fulfilled the academic requirements for radiography. I requested that it be added to my application so I’m still waiting for an answer.

Have you heard anything about the MBBS program at Uwi cave hill? I know it is fairly new and its know for Law, but I wanted to know if you heard anything in regards to the quality of teaching, resources etc for the med students there.
Also if accepted to uwi, do their students get decent financial aid: scholarships/grants etc? Can they apply for loans? how do you recommend going about seeking other forms of aid? Also, what is a sponsored vs nonsponsored student?

The last 3 years are about your clinical apprenticeship. They take place in primarily clinical rather than classroom settings and focus on the management of patients.

Hi Smiles. Of course not! Cave Hill may be the youngest campus but that doesn’t mean it’s substandard. And you should bear in mind that Mona alumni will be pretty biased.

I don’t know about “cannot”. I have seen Trinidadian interns at some hospitals, but I don’t know what the official policy is. I do know that we have a strong preference for Jamaican students (especially since intern spots are limited) as well as graduates of UWI who do not have internships available in their home country. Most Trinis opt to go back home though.

Good day.. I did my first year in the FST and have applied for a transfer in January for the MBBS programme . I recently got my final results and GPA (3.71). Do you know any who transferred? When we’re they contacted? Do you think I have a good chance of being accepted for the sponsored programme?

I hope you’re gotten a response by now. If not, there’s still a little bit of time left (til the end of July usually). I think faculty transfers are contacted around the same time as everyone else or maybe a little bit before.
I think you have as good a chance as anyone with all 1s in CAPE. 3.7 is an impressive GPA – congrats!

RE: CONDITIONS TO OBTAIN THE SUBSIDY
HI ROBYN!
I AM TYPING IN BLOCK CAPITALS SO EVERYONE CAN SEE THIS.
So, I called UWI today and they said that you need 29 points to qualify for the subsidy from six core subjects not including Caribbean studies or communication studies. How these points are calculated are as follow:
Grade 1- Five points
Grade 2-Four points
Grade 3- Three ppoints
Grade 4- Two Points
Grade 5- One point
Grade 6- No point
So, basically, you can get a minimum of one two to qualify for the subsidy and of course 5 ones. Please add this to your information above.
And no, having 28 points will not make you qualified.

Good day Ashley. I too am a US citizen who was born and raised in Jamaica, was accepted to study medicine at UWI Mona and am having difficulties securing a student loan. There are no banks here that grant funding to the UWI however Royal Bank of Canada does have a loan agreement with the institution. If you have two qualified Bajan or Canadian cosigners you should be in luck as they have branches in Barbados. I hope this helps. All the best.

There are credit weightings, which are available on the online Student Administration System. Courses range from 9 credits (core disciplines like Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Pathology & Microbiology) to 2 credits (pass or fail courses like electives).

Robin considering the limited medical resources at most hospitals in Jamaica, how do you rate your clinical rotation experience? Students are encouraged to take the USMLE to qualify for residency rotations in the US. How easily do Jamaican graduates qualify for and make the transition to US residency?

My clinical rotation experience was good, despite the low resources. The teaching was usually great (and you know that doesn’t depend on resources) and while you’re in school everyone is keen to point out that even though this difference between the ideal and what we actually do in practice so you don’t lose out on 1st world academics. Plus in your exam, you’re supposed to respond like you have all resources available to you.
I don’t generally see us having a problem with USMLEs. The people I talk to who say they’re leaving actually do end up matching and taking off.

Haha, I wish. It’s really just swotting. Try finding mnemonics – there are quite a few resources online, especially for anatomy. Try the Netter flash cards – carry them with you every where and see if that helps. Go over it with a group of friends. And at the end of the day, sometimes you just have to memorize. Unfortunately with anatomy (but not with clinicals!) there’s really no principle to apply to help you remember the fine print details. Just have to go to class & review sessions and pay attention to the things the lecturers emphasize.

I first want to say thank you for your posts they have been very helpful to a med school hopeful such as myself. And here we go… I am a US citizen who was recently accepted into UWI mona MBBS program. I have a BS in bio and MS in Physiology. I deferred the 2015 school year in hopes of getting accepted into a US medical school but it seems that may be a loss. Both of my parents are from the west indies, one of them being from JA. I still have family in the Kingston area. I am very hesitant on doing my medical education at UWI not because I do not think it is good school but because I would like to complete a residency and specialize in the US. to be honest I know I do not want to practice medicine in the Caribbean. I have been given some gruesome details on the match rate for IMGs (international Medical Graduates…regardless of citizenship) less than 40% of all (the entire world…) actually get placed regardless of stellar Step scores and grade. I would hate for me to put in 5years of work + more student loans then find out that I can’t practice medicine at home. I am kinda at war with myself and I would love an outside opinion. Have you met anyone in my position? What is the match rate for UWI student who want to do residency in the US if they were matched how did they measure up did they do amazingly in all courses or did summer programs in the US. Lastly do you guy have linked residency program in the US or preferred schools that match UWI students?

1. Will you be taking out student loans to pay your way? If so, where were you able to get funding.
2. Have you considered doing a postbacc or masters for a year with linkage? Quite a few US osteopathic and allopathic medical schools have them. This is the route I will be pursuing because of competitive residency match and student loans concerns.

I can’t comment on how hard it is, but the matriculation requirements re grades are on the UWI website (something like a 3.3 GPA or higher) and extra-curricular activities have never hurt anyone (unless they’re impacting your academics)

It depends on a lot, Kevin. Your grades are weighted along with your involvement in co-curricular activities as well as (sadly or happily) your ability to afford the full tuition is necessary. So I really can’t comment on your chances.

Hey Abigail, gonna be honest with you. Med at UWI has gotten super competitive over the last free with years, significantly more so than when I started. Those are good grades but I can’t possibly predict your chances of acceptance. Sorry I’m not more help but good luck in August!

I applied to both St. Augustine & Mona.. I was made an offer by Mona for a bachelors degree in science though I didn’t make a second choice in my application. The email said something along the lines of applications to other programs I have applied for are still being processed & accepting would not affect my chances because I could accept a more favourable offer at a later date… I haven’t responded yet because I want to study medicine hence the reason why I didn’t select any second choice in my applications.. but browsing through the comments I saw persons saying you could start off studying one thing then transfer to med if you do really well.. Do you think I should accept just incase to atleast have that as an option? & I was wondering if I were to get into med school wouldn’t I have gotten a response by now??? Based on the point system mentioned I have 25 points, which is OK but I fear it’s not good enough.. Do you think I have a shot?? The anticipation is killing me! #FreakingOut

Acceptance to med school can happen late, like late July early August. But if the email said you can accept that now then accept a more favour me option later then I think you should go ahead and do that. Or you can wait and see if you get into med school. Do what you think is best for you.

Hello , I’m from trinidad I recently got accepted to med in cave hill but uwi mona is my first choice. I was told that mona is harder to get into than cave hill . My cape unit 1 grade are 2s in chem,bio comm and 3 in physics and cape unit 2 grades are grade 1 in bio grade 2 in chem and grade 3 in physics. Can I get into uwi mona with these grades? Or can I attend cave hill and transfer into mona later ?

Tbh I’m not sure those grades are competitive enough to get into Mona. And I’m not sure if cross-campus transfers happen often if at all. Another option would be to do the natural sciences at Mona (if that was a 2nd choice for you) and transfer to medicine from that faculty.
But the best people to ask would be the campus administration at both Mona and Cave Hill to see what your options are for transfer. I’m curious though, why didn’t you apply for St. Augustine?

Taylor Hall (coed) is the closest; it’s also a traditional hall. The Elsa Leo Rhynie hall (aka ‘Towers’) is close as well. This is coed and also fairly new. Chancellor (all male) and Mary Seacole (all female) are still nearby on Ring Road. These are traditional halls too.
Further away you have Irvine Hall. Then around the common there are Rex Nettleford Hall, A. Z. Preston, Marlene Hamilton (aka Postgrad) and a new set of apartments they developed in 2015 in the middle of the common. There are also options for living off campus.

I have a question….
I have a two in bio unit one, a three in bio unit two and a three in chem unit one. Is there even the SLIGHTEST chance that I would be accepted in the mbbs programme? Or do I need to do bio unit two and chem unit one again?

Ackalia, there is always a chance. However those grades are not competitive enough to get into Medicine straight away. Rather than repeating your CAPE subjects I would suggest doing a Natural Sciences degree (in the Faculty of Science and Technology) and then re-attempting your application either partway through that programme or when you have completed it. That way you would be moving forward in your academic career, rather than repeating the same level.

You can take CXCs in the sciences and apply for the Pre-Science programme which lasts Two semesters . Then apply for med. At least in UWI STA you can apply for medicine like this. Just look at the requirements on their website to see exactly what you need to do then do it and make sure you ACE those science subjects.

Building on what Joann said, the Preliminary Sciences Programe is a sort of fast track into Medicine. You complete both units of CAPE in one year instead of two and apply for university at the same time.
You can complete CSEC Biology, Physics, Chemistry (or whatever the requirements are for the Preliminary science programme) then try to get into Medicine through that route.

Hi I’ve been reading this blog for a while now and have noticed that those who got accepted had noticed that pending cape results was automatically added on the admissions portal I still haven’t received anything concerning being accepted and i am freaking out at this moment I know 24 points is hardly competitive for MBBS and just wanted to know by the way if something is wrong with my application since cape results are out but the grades on the portal for me was not updated.

Nella, I suggest you go straight to the faculty. My daughter also has 26 points and we went up to Mona this morning to the Dean’s office after hearing a few of her friends went that route. We were basically told that over 24 points qualify you for entry but only on the self sponsored programme. You would have to apply for a bursary separately because the faculty does not offer this. The long and short of it is you can getting in is not the problem (six 2s in CAPE are basically 24 points), affordability is.

Today we were told you can technically be offered a place providing you get 24 points (six 2s will qualify you for entry) but you need to be able to demonstrate that you can fund the programme. I got in to uwi Mona with 26 points but I cannot afford it as well. So I have decided to take a gap year and re sit three of my cape subjects that I got twos in. I will then reapply to try and get the subsidy next year. So no it is not the end of the road. If med is something you really want to do you won’t stop going after it. Besides there are many benefits to a gap year.

Well Robyn I didn’t hear that but I know students are deferred a lot due to lack of space and I heard from a student that she had no class all week because no doctor was available to teach them. From personal experience I see a need for doctors in the public hospitals. Patients line the corridors all night waiting to see a doctor esp at EWMSC.

Point of correction I have 25 points : 2’s in Unit 1 Bio, Pure Math and Chem; 3 in Unit 1 Physics. 1’s in Unit 2 Bio and Chem. 2 and 3 in Unit 2 Physics and Pure Math respectively. I was told I will be accepted only if I am able to prove that I can pay the fees without sponsorship. Would it make a difference receiving the letter of acceptance even though I have to take a year off to better my grades?

You would have to prove that you can pay. Then they will send the acceptance letter. But I suggest you take a gap year and re do the cape subjects that you got twos in. I have heard from many that quite a lot of people demonstrate their ability to pay but can only do so up until probably 3rd year and end up being pulled from the programmed because of their inability to meet payment deadlines. And I also heard that there are many who are not really qualified for the programme but are financially able and thus get accepted. I dont know how true this is but I wouldn’t say it is wise to step into med like that… Any word on this Robyn?

Have to say that is true. Many people who may be less qualified are allowed in because of their ability to pay. And it isn’t feasible to start without a means of continuing. Scholarships and grants are another route to pursue but they are very few. Bank loans are another way but again, they will require collateral. Gap year may be the most reliable option.

Hi, Joann I did do prescience. I got all A’s except for Chemistry semester two and Physics semester one. However I repeated those two in the summer, since I knew UWI STA is competitive and I got A’s. So I ended up with all A’s in the end. IF you are doing pre-science this year, my advice is would be to start studying early. The work material is not hard but it is alot. Especially biology, I think I started studying the first week of class. If you want to go to UWI STA then I think you need to get all A’s and tried to avoid having to repeat classes in the summer. I think that’s why I got deferred until next year because they receive my summer grades late. Anyway good luck. If you have any specific questions feel free to ask.

For bio the offer you a booklet of past paper to buy for $50 dollars, at least that what they did last year. For Chem the library has past papers that you could get online the the library website. I would offer you mine but I threw them away. For Chem, make sure to do at least five past papers before the final exam all the questions are repeats from past papers. I don’t have much info for Math except that I know that it is hard.

My professors used to ask the class, what do you call a doctor who had to resit the MBBS exam? The answer, a doctor.
In this profession passion matters more than academic ability. Patient care has a lot to do with actually caring. If you have both, that’s great. But it’s so much better to work with doctors who work hard because this is what they love rather than doctors who think they’re too smart to do anything else.

They went back and did pre sci and made it in. It is simply a preference for A levels and lack of space, esp in STA. Don’t get depressed.

I was so happy when Robyn said it was removed. I really don’t know why people are so hateful and socially inept to not know when to say something even when they are thinking it. From the posts I’m seeing on this blog, you are all bright students with great grades it’s just that the medical programme is very expensive. Med school does have a point system and it is very competitive. Even students that are self sponsored have to first qualify. i received acceptance in science and tech very early (since june ) and i decided to go along with it , registration came along and no word from the medical science department as yet so i decided to follow through with the process and register my 1st yr courses. now here i am early september and uwi offers me a deffered acceptance for 2017/2018, is it possible to accept that offer for next year but finish the 1st yr courses in science and tech and maybe transfer into the med programme ??

Hi Dencharlo. In terms of advice, I come from the school of do as I say and not as I do lol. Ideally, you should have been revising topics as the semester progressed so that as exams draw near you’re fairly confortable with most things.
If you haven’t done that, revising past papers is a good way to focus your studying. Study groups can be invaluable too. Important to remember is that you can’t study everything so you have to prioritize. Try to concentrate on the topics your lecturers highlighted.
And get sleep the night before the exam! Sleep helps you remember the things you studied when you’re actually in the exam, and not an hour later instead. (Trust me on that one)

A question that I had is that I’m a first year college student in the USA. I did not seriously consider UWI until recently, and your post made me love it even more!
I graduated high school in the USA this year with an IB Diploma and 29 points (but did not take Bio or Chem). During my first semester of college, I took Chemistry 1, and by the end of the second semester, I will have had Chemistry 2 and Bio 1 taken care of.
I’m assuming my college GPA would be a 3.0 and my HS GPA (unweighted) was a 3.47 with a 3.7 weighted GPA.
Would it be possible to apply at this stage to start Fall 2017?

Hi John, thank you! You may need to complete Biology 2, as well as having Math or Physics under your belt. I don’t know how exactly your qualifications translate to ours, but definitely your GPA puts you in the running. See if you can bump up your college GPA to at least 3.3 because UWI would look at that one more than your high school GPA.

I’m in the same boat as you. I did one year of college in the US [took all of the prelim courses] and this fall would’ve been my second year; however, I’ll be *by God’s will* attending UWI next fall, but instead doing the Prelim year to get into the med program. I do know someone in her 4th year of the med program that did IB credits (bio and chem included) and went straight into med school, but since you didn’t take those based on what they’ve told me so far, you’d have to do the Prelim year as the Med department doesn’t take transfers, they will only use your transcript to evaluate you as a student. SO hypothetically speaking, if UWI is really where you want to go, you shouldn’t waste time going into your second semester, as it would not be beneficial to your UWI career.

Thank you so much for the input! I’m a little unsure know. What exactly is the prelim year? Is it part of the 5 year MBBS program or kind of like UWI’s version of Pre-Med, which then determines whether or not you’ll get into med school? If so, I feel it will be a little risk since IF I don’t make the cut after spending one year at UWI, it will be a significant financial and academic blow, since I will have lost one year where I could’ve been taking courses in the USA, and I will have invested so much money.
Is there anyone you’d recommend that I contact? I want to see if I can fulfill the intro courses here in the USA and then go into the medical program? I’m really unsure at this point.
With that said, I really, really appreciate your insight and input. If you didn’t give me this information, no one probably would’ve. All the best to you and I really hope it works out for you at UWI.

Hi again! The prelim course is more like premed. You’re not guaranteed a place in the med school class but it does put you ahead of the stream. If you’re not 100% committed to UWI then I do recommend you continue along your course in the US. You can contact the Dept of Medicine or the UWI admissions dept to see which matriculation requirements you would need as an international student and that might help you to make your decision.

Well really, i’ve tried to cut all the corners. I’ve spoken to every possible person one could speak to about not having my perfect GPA and one year of paid USA education go down the drain, but unfortunately it will.
UWI doesnt accept transfer students so you’d you have to start all over if you wanna make it into the med school. The prelim year isnt bad (ive seen the curriculum) .. as its basic Bio and chem… So basically the classes youre taking now/ similar to AP classes curriculum. You have to maintain a 3.0 avg to be considered for acceptance into the MED school, which isnt too bad. It is definitely do-able if this is the career you want to be in, then you make sacrifices to maintain a GPA that will qualify your acceptance into the med school

Actually, if you are attending CAPE or Pre sciences programme as soon as you get your results say one week after your result they will update your status. In my case I did CAPE and Prescience so I got mine on end of JULy last year. This is from ST Augustine campus.

I’m not used to applications for fall next year starting so early. Usually applications go in by March in the year of entry, with notifications going out in late July and August.

hey robin, i recently found your blog and find it quite useful. I do have a question though pertaining to uwi and the medical shcool department..and the subsidy aspect
So im about to sit my cape unit 2 come may/june
My unit 1 grades werent all that good was going through some hard stuff..
I only got 1 grade1 and it wasnt in bio or chem, was in math.
My question is if I choose to do over unit 1 bio and chem, but not in my year for unit 2, so during the year 2017/2018 and i manage to get all ones on those two, would they still count my one grade 1 from my “official” unit 1 year?
Cause how i see it even if i get all ones this year for unit 2 (or at least ones in chem, bio and math) i still wont meet this 30 pts thing they have going on, I would only get 28 points.

Hi Lizzie, yes they would still count your Unit 1 Math grade. But they will have questions about the time lapse so be prepared for that.

dear Robyn, I am in quite a pickle here. Looking for a transfer. I am currently in sci tech and didn’t do extremely good in semester ONE resulting n bios C+ and B, Chem Failed and Biochem C. I wasn’t prepared as I though. Do you think its possible to get a transfer If I ace semester 2 and do over chem to at least get the THROUGH AND MAYBE POSSIBLE ATLEAST 50%?

Hi, Tracey. I have to say your prognosis is guarded. It’s true that inter-faculty transfers are more readily facilitated than first time applicants, but at this point in UWI’s career it’s not so much about having the grades as it is about having the tuition fees ready.
So yes, it’s entirely possible that you can get accepted into Medicine with less than stellar grades, but you would be looking at paying the full non-sponsored tuition fee. My advice to you (from a purely economical standpoint) would be to finish off your Science degree and see what your options with those qualifications. At the end of the day you would have much less debt to worry about.
If you’re dead set on doing Medicine – I would strongly recommend trying one of our bilateral programmes with either Cuba or Russia because those tuition fees are fully sponsored. You would be bonded to the govt for 5 years but you would also be a fully licensed medical practitioner regardless.

I feel like beating myself up because I am in a similar situation what Tracey is in. I got in with CAPE but it was just full-fee with 28 points. Now Im stuck at sci tech with alright grades and based on my chance its very slim to pick up back myself and recover if I ace semester 2. I will be ‘forced’ to major in bio because that is the only thing that will be available at lv 2 since I didn’t do maths. I never intended to leave UWI. In Gods willing all I can hope for is that UWI accepts me with 50% and not full fee. Have faith Tracey, and Do very well in semester 2 and hope UWI can reconsider.

How much point do you need in cape to qualify to do medicine as a sponsored student?

Last year it was 29 points (that’s like 5 ones and 1 two). I don’t know if they change it based on quota or the numbers that actually make it to 29 or if in a particular year if many of the applicants have 30 points, only those get the sponsorship.

It is possible to get a transfer to do another programme with your grades. I failed all of my Science and Teachnology courses at UWI, Mona and got a transfer to do radiography. Digressing a bit here- I hope that you are not thinking about doing radiography to make up for medicine like I did. Not the best choice now (speaking from experience). I finished that degree with first class honours but still wasn’t able to matriculate into medicine with it. I really wanted to do medicine so I did over my CAPE subjects after doing that degree, got the 29 points and hence the subsidy and is currently in my first year of med school. It’s a lottt of hard work though but it’s ‘doable’. My suggestion is- if you really want to do medicine, finish this semester of sci tech, do really well and still apply for medicine. if you don’t get through for your desired offer, then take the year off and do over the core CAPE subjects (bio, chem math/physics) and try to ace those and you’ll be fine. But don’t opt for the quick fix- transfer to another faculty- because you didn’t get through to medicine on your first attempt.

@Jo. It wasn’t bad actually. I was a lot of more focused the second time around. I must say though that it was a bit challenging trying to remember some of the concepts for some of the subjects at first but it was good preparation for medicine, where workload is concerned. Just set small goals for yourself, get in the habit of reading constantly and keep up with the work and you’ll be fine and btw ACCCEE your IAs if you are repeating those. Also, bear in mind that you don’t have to be an Einstein to do well, you just have to work hard consistently and always keep the dream in mind. You’ve got this! I believe in you. Go and ace those exams!

@ Jo. I didn’t get my acceptance letter until about the 3rd week of August. MBBS is usually the last programme to issue acceptance letters. They usually just offer a provisional acceptance to persons who have all 1s in unit 1.

Kemar, I’m sorry that you did not talk to someone before declining the acceptance. If your parents could pay the 50% it is not given at the acceptance but actually a bursary that you apply for. It is still quite expensive but it makes a big difference. Another issue is that once you accept for full tuition, even if your grades are great, you are locked in and cannot be placed on the sponsored fee structure.

Hi James, the bursary which covers 50% of the full fee is not an offer that you receive with your acceptance. I’m actually not sure if some people are offered it but for most, you need to apply for the Faculty of Medical Science (FMS) Bursary. Best if you call student services to get the full information though but I do believe once you get accepted it doesn’t matter if you got in with 24 points or 28 points. Good luck.

My daughter got in with 27 points and as I just explained to James, I don’t think the bursary office even knew her grades and points she got so yes I believe once you get the offer for full fee you are eligible. The offer letter was used as a part of the application process with other documents on financial information.

UWI medical school is completely accredited, but each country/territory has its own licensing exam which you will have to sit before you are legally allowed to practice there.

Not sure about transfers. The schooling system and requirements are entirely different. If you start at an off shore medical school such as the American Institute of Medical Sciences (which is in Jamaica) then possibly.

I felt depressed on Friday, when I saw some of my friends got pinned and I was stucked over sci-tech. I hope I can get through this year. I had 28 points and they told me full fee. It must have felt like a honor to be pinned. Do you know any other things needed for the transfer other than great academic performance?

Hi Danielle! Thank you for the encouragement. In answer to your question:
Class schedule in pre-clin is roughly 8am to 12 noon for lectures. Then you have tutorials in the afternoon, which can vary in time and frequency.
Anatomy tutorials/labs are usually afternoon to evening affairs, because they depend on the availability of surgical residents from the nearby teaching hospital.
If you attend all your scheduled sessions the average day runs from 8-4, except for Thursdays where afternoon time is used for co-curricular activities. In your first year you will also need to attend foundation courses, which will usually be in the evenings (because of the 8-4 medicine schedule). But if you have a pre-existing degree from UWI you may be exempt from those.
This hasn’t changed much over the years; I got confirmation of the schedule from a current 2nd year med student. Hope it helps you plan!

Wow, lots to answer. I’ll try to tackle them in the order you asked.
Begin with the assumption that all your classes are important. Not all of them are important but it’s not up to you as a 1st year to decide what you can skip without consequences. This also depends on your learning style. If you’re mainly an audio-visual learner then lectures will help. If you do better just reading then you can always revise notes and PowerPoints on your own.
If you’re still determined to skip lectures, go ahead and ask the 2nd years what classes they wish they had skipped in 1st year. They can be your most valuable source of information
Anatomy is unavoidable, learn to love it (or at least swot it) from early.
The new words aren’t as overwhelming as you might think. Here repetition is the soul of learning. Use cue cards, rote memorization techniques and mnemonics to get the new terms to stick. Mnemonics are going to be your best friends.
The virtual learning environment (OurVLE) is open to all registered students of the University. Lecturers will sometimes upload PowerPoint copies of their lectures or revision notes to the site. It’s not specific to campus ( as in Mona vs. WJC) but I think OurVLE might be specific to Jamaica.

I tried to convince even my mother about it but she still seems iffy
She asks if it is required that one maintains a certain average or GPA or previously had a a certain GPA to still get that subsidy for the 5years for someone who only did CAPE u know and gained those 29/30pts?
Im also concerned because I’d like to know if id need to apply for it or something?

Hi Lizzie, I have to say that I am not 100% sure about how the point system works or if it even exists officially. However I do know that your CAPE grades and co-curricular involvement are taken into consideration when it come to student ranking for awarding the govt subsidy.
The government subsidy covers 75% of tuition fees and is awarded only to a handful of students each year (somewhere between 50-75 students). It’s not something you claim, it’s something that’s offered based on your grades, co-curriculars, references etc. I would advise you to speak with the Dean directly if you want further clarification or assistance.
Once you are offered the government subsidy you don’t lose it, ie it covers all five years. Most scholarships require a certain grade level but I don’t think the subsidy works the same way. Again, don’t quote me.
You don’t apply for the govt subsidy but you do have to apply for the bursaries offered by the Faculty which can cover up to 50% of tuition. The govt subsidy and faculty bursary are mutually exclusive. I don’t know whether you have to maintain a certain grade point to retain the bursary.

I found out it was based on my grades last year in which I got 24 points so I am currently doing over some cape subjects to hopefully get 29 points this year.Anyways just out of curiosity do uwi give non governmental offers to anyone regardless of their grade or is their a specific range for which both non sponsored and sponsored are offered. Sorry for the long drawn out question.

Hi Janet, I just completed the UWI preliminary science course at the Montego Bay Community College. To be honest its not too hard. BUT, IT IS A LOOOOOT OF WORK. I can’t stress that enough. Takes a lot of discipline. Imagine 2 yrs of cape in 9 months. Bio labs where 3hrs long 2 times a week. Chem lab was 4hrs. 1 time for the week. It was the only class i had on a Tuesday. School was from 8:30 to 5 Monday to Thursday, ends at 3:30 on a friday. Along with the 3 courses they included personal development and academic advisory 1hr each. Hi Inez, I’m really not sure. I don’t think you can pass the course if you fail the spotter, but definitely ask one of your tutors or even a 2nd year student for current guidelines.

HI CARLA, the degree so far went well they are 3 Indian lecturers at first it was hard to understand but with time I got use to it. the curriculum to me for classes such as FDT is to lengthy and you have to revise a whole year of work for this exam. Some of the lecturers has their ways of not uploading lectures on time but other than it going ok. I am bajan and rent starts at 250 US and up. I cant comment on food and so on becuz our Government recently increased taxes on imports which takes affect July 1st.

this look like a the first year nobody is transfering from sci tech to med and i feel to give up pon life. my semester i grades are A,A-,B+,B+ and semester 2 A,A+,A- B+, and they say that I never meet the prerequisites to qualify even with months of volunteering service leading up to the application transfer. Lol what am I suppose to do. My Gpa is 3.72 and I never make it. Sci Tech is truly the worst faculty and I hope them dont expect to me do level 2 of there program. Better I look a 9 to 5 or something. I really need help here.

So sorry to hear that Tyrone, makes you wonder what it is that they are really looking for. Smh. Did someone guide you thou on the courses that were to take? What were the four you did that you got Such great grade in.
Maybe you should talk to somebody to query the reasons for not moving on. You should not give up tho. Go for your dreams.

I did what they asked for. Biology, Chem and Psychology. Bio is split into two courses each semester. BIOL1017 A,BIOL 1018 A-, Chem 1901 B+, Psyc1000 B+, and 2nd semester BIOL1262 A, BIOL1263 A+, CHEM1902 A-, PSyc1001 B+. I asked the med sci what courses were required and they recommended these. They say my grades aren’t good enough. I really don’t want to do level 2 of sci tech. I hope theyre waiting on cape grades so I can slip through the cracks but I am feeling false hope. Is there anything I can do or find someone to talk to? Any help is appreciable. Thank You

Hello. I obtained 1-Pure Math, 1-Physics, 1-communication studies, 2-biology, 3-chemistry I’m unit 1. My grades for unit 2 are pending. What do you think are my chances of getting accepted to the MBBS if I obtained at least 2-biology, 2-chemistry for unit 2? I have 10 cxcs… 8 ones (including biology, chemistry and physics) and 2 ones (social studies and spanish).

Those are good grades Neiques, but the MBBS program is very competitive with most successful applicants having all 1’s in their CAPE grades. Even when you have all ones you can still have trouble being accepted for the sponsored program. Remember that your CSEC grades are not counted as matriculation requirements.

Whoa, big question. Lemme tackle the second half of it first.
35 isn’t particularly mature. In my class alone we had at least 2 older gentlemen switching careers (think 40-50 years old) and it’s not uncommon. I think the trick is balancing all your other obligations with the demands of medical school.
In our setting all interns get jobs upon graduation, as far as I know. I don’t think we discriminate based on age and in fact looking mature is a useful asset in your professional interactions.

Hello Brina, thank you for your kind words! Unfortunately MBBS students don’t get enough time off to do the work and study program, especially not after their first year. The summer of first year is perhaps the most accommodating since it runs for about 3 months.
That being said, med school doesn’t deny us as many opportunities as we think it does, and it really depends on the individual to seek out the opportunity they want. I encourage you to speak directly with the coordinator of that program and see what can be worked out.

You can reuse your lab grades if they were good. I did that this year. Just let the school which youreplanning to resit the subject/s at know you’re reusing your lab grades

If i dont get into med i going turn a grass cutter or look a 9-5, Its med or nothing. I didnt even hesitated to reject sci tech bad lucked acceptance which i didnt even applied for. I just hope everybody get through and have a good time.

I do, actually. It’s totally possible and you may even get a few exemptions since the BB Med Sci curriculum closely follows MBBS for the first 2 years.

You definitely would not be too old. Several students choose to do another degree first, and remember that’s the trend in the US.
We actually had a group of middle aged gentlemen who were switching careers. The oldest one had children who were almost university age. And there have been even older folks in the past.

You definitely won’t be treated as an outcast because of your age. Quite a number of people in my year finished a degree and then started medicine and they managed to build lasting friendships with a number of younger folks. You’ll find that university students don’t put as much emphasis on age differences.

What is the possibility of a student who got non-governmental acceptance to UWI Mona MBBS-who cannot afford the tuition- to enroll in science and technology for the first semester, then transfer to MBBS in January and become a governmental sponsored student?

I don’t think the faculty accepts transfers in the middle of the year. It’s usually at the start of the incoming batch. But you could always call and ask.

Hi Carla, they told my class there were limited spaces because there were “so many of us” . We had several meetings, there were drafts of petitions and plans for protest. In the end nothing changed. Everyone who graduated and stayed in the island had a job come July 1. I’m sure the class of 2016 also all found jobs, and the class of 2017 as well.
The bottom line is not to worry about whether you’ll have a job. But you asked what options there are if you wind up with out an internship. You would most likely be given first choice with the next batch of interns which is usually in January of the following year. Alternatively, UWI may decide to allow more hospitals to have interns.
Hope this has allayed your concerns somewhat. Work hard and apply early and you should be fine :)

I still haven’t gotten any emails from uwi and this year I did over some subjects and got all ones.. I now have 29 points and I called and they said I am eligible for the sponsored programme. Also, they keep telling me that by this week or next week I’ll hear from them. But I’ve also been hearing that faculty orientation is next week. So I am confused..

The faculty of medicine is notoriously late with admission notifications. Sit tight and keep calling them. Don’t be surprised if you find out the day before orientation.

Ali, I strongly suggest that you visit the faculty. Sometimes calls just don’t work. A similar situation happened to my daughter last year so I decided to take her there bright and early one morning. We got email the same evening after we went there.

I received an email this evening re an advance offer for next year… :(.. this will be my second year trying to get through. Last year I was offered the non sponsored but I took the year and did over some capes… now that I got the ones, this is what happens. I guess I will have to find a job or enroll in something else outside of uwi for the time being.

Ali, I’m sorry you were disappointed. If medicine is really your passion you’ll circle back to it, but I understand the need to refocus your energy. You can use the extra year to do some soul searching and decide if medicine is definitely what you want to do with your life.

I was wondering if anyone knows about the Scotia Professional Student Plan?
Has anyone ever applied for it?
It claims they only loan to medical students and it will loan about 100% of the school fee
and they give 18 months breathing room before you start to pay unlike SLB that only gives 6 months.
Would anyone recommend it?

I got into MBBS but I got the full fee 3.6 mill, which I can’t afford. I wan’t to do med but I don’t want to take my chances at sci tech, from previous post I see that if you do BBMS you get accepted to MBBS but do you get 80%?. Because I really don’t mind getting a degree then doing med just not over sci tech.

I would really like to know the standard by which students are being accepted into med. Some people with really good grades and co-curricular are being turned away, without even a deferral while others with lower grades get accepted. I wonder what’s going on?

Robyn how did you cope with foundation courses did you ace them ? what do you recommend to take them on.

Hi Kevar. Foundation courses are pass/fail so most students did the bare minimum to get by. I like English and writing so that course appealed to me. And Caribbean civilization was also very interesting so I worked hard in it. I recommend attending the lectures, working on past papers and treating it as seriously as you would your MBBS courses.
But that’s just my opinion. You can always talk to one of the third or fourth years to see how they managed. If I remember correctly there are ways to pass without too much effort.

HELLO RObyn , I Am in my 2nd year of BB med sci. I am doing this to have a degree then don mbbs. I would already have exceptions for my first year but if I major in anatomy I would have exemption so for some second year. Than non existent in any of the other disciplines . Should I just major in anatomy since it would be less difficult .

Hi, Dell. Books you need for first year include anatomy and physiology texts, as well as histology and pathology.
Netters Atlas of anatomy, Guyton’s textbook of physiology, diFiore’s histology and Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease are some examples.

Yes it is in STA the 1st semester DVM and MBBS are basically the same courses

I wouldn’t be able to advise you on that. We don’t have a DVM program at Mona so I’m not sure about how transfers are conducted. Best place to ask would be your faculty advisors.

I’m thinking of applying to the UWI MBBS program for 2018/2019 admissions. My CAPE grades are:
U1 Bio – I, Chem – II, Geo – II
U2 Bio – I, Chem – II, Geo – I
According to the point system I have a total of 27 points and great co curricular involvement. However, I’m afraid that because my third subject is non science, my chances have become even more slim. Has anyone here gotten in with similar grades? Do you guys think I have a good chance of getting accepted?

Hi M, thank you. Those grades look pretty good to me and I think geography is technically a science subject, comparable to mathematics even. I would recommend contacting the faculty admissions department directly to confirm whether those 3 subjects are acceptable. Hopefully someone here may have had the same subjects and will be able to share their experience.

Hi. Your blog was very helpful. I applied for UWI this year. I applied for Medical Science Faculty. My first choice was MBBS and my second choice was nursing both under Medical Science Facility. I just got my acceptance letter but they say that I’ve been accepted into the Faculty of Scoence and Technology howevery carrer path training (medical doctor) does not stem from this faculty. Can you tell me why I was accepted into this field and if it is final please.

Hi Cid. Congratulations! As for reading, I can suggest textbooks of anatomy or physiology. For first year, histology is super important as well as fundamentals of disease and treatment.
Of course my personal suggestion is to enjoy your remaining free time as much as possible. You won’t have very much after this.

I didnt go to classes, I got a job to help buy clothes and save for med school and when the exam was approaching, I went to marathons but it was only one unit I did over but if it was more, I still wouldnt go to classes, just marathons. I just got accepted in November though as a result of an advanced offer.

Yes @ go to classes. I re did my subjects @ Maths Unlimited after almost 10 years of leaving high school. The teachers there are very good and they keep you sharp with frequent quizzes to assess your progress. I also found the CXC study guide that they provide as part of the package to be very good as well, plus they provide you with copious past paper questions. I re did Chemistry Unit 2, Mathematics Unit 1 & 2 and Biology Unit 1 & 2. Got 4 1s n a 2 for Math Unit 2. Got accepted into the MBBS programme the same year with the government subsidy.
It was a lot of work though but at the same time it was good preparation for Medical School.
By the way, Medical school at UWI is no joke. Make sure that this is your passion. The workload is never ending but it can be done if you put in the work and enjoy the process.

Hi Hailey. Admission letters usually go out in the summer before the semester starts. I don’t know how early your application will be processed though, since you applied so early.
As far as I know UWI Mona does not schedule interviews for MBBS matriculation. But you can always call the department directly to confirm this.

Hi everyone. Robyn I’m currently fifteen yrs old and decided I wanted to start looking into med school because of my anticipation to just start the medical journey. reading these posts haven’t made my mind waver but have just increased my excitement to go to med school. I am a Jamaican student who has my mind set on UWI Mona. My financial status is not the best but I believe that I should always be fearful in the pursuit of what sets my soul on fire and right now even while I am writing this my entire being is set on fire with the thought of being in a hospital and helping people. I have decided that I don’t want to leave the people who decide whether or not I am accepted with no choice but to accept me without hesitation. and I now definitely have to increase my academic standing and persevere through all the subjects I struggle with. in the upcoming school year, I will be in grade 11 because I started school a bit early and I ask for your prayers and best wishes and thank you for inspiring me, for I’m definitely coming back in a couple years to pest you guys about UWI MONA :)

I certainly hope not! One of the best things about university is the wide variety of people in your classes. There’s usually a group (or small clique) for everyone.
Not to mention a good number of people do first degrees before they start medical school, so you should easily be able to find people your age if that’s your preference.

Hi Rhea, usually the students in the year ahead have access to past papers so you can talk to them. Sometimes people in your own year can be savvy enough to have them too. Just gotta have the links.

Just a quick update: I matriculated into the MBBS programme for fall 2018. In order to get the government sponsored fee, you must have 1s across all CAPE subjects. Many students this year are paying the 28,000$ because there were a lot of people who deferred from Fall 2017. Because of this deferment there were less government sponsored spots for those matriculating in Fall 2018.
I heard of people deferring by one year and getting the government sponsored tuition fee this year. So that’s always an option Mista.

hailey is right…but u do have people that got in med school with less than 30 point this year…i got in with 26 points…but it isnt always like that…all depends on the overall performance so i suggest you work for the 6 ones
you can apply for the 50% bursary but you have to do it as soon as you get the acceptance letter because it closes very early.
in order for u to do this, u have to go directly to osf to collect the application…documents needed: CERTIFIED job letter of the person paying your school fee, CERTIFIED bank statement or last 3 pay slips etc (its stated on the application) is just to prove that u can pay the other half of the school fee

I’d strongly suggest you redo Unit One to improve your chances. If you can afford the full tuition in case you don’t get offered a bursary then that’s another option.

SATs count for students from US high schools. I’m not sure if it applies to students who have sat CAPE. You can contact the admissions office or Medical Sciences department to clarify.

Hello, I have read through all of the comments and they have been somewhat helpful but I was wondering about persons like me who don’t do Cape or CXC in my country and did the preliminary science. is there certain amount of each country that is accepted or its just based on the acceptance. For example, in the Bahamas, only 14 students are accepted, Trinidad, only 13 people are accepted…etc. Is it like that?

Great question. I don’t know of specific country quotas. Your career counsellor or guidance counsellor would be a good person to ask though. But you can also go ahead and apply!

I did a degree at UWI in the FST. I wasn’t very focused and I got a lower second class honors degree. I also failed one of the Introductory Chem courses, hgot a B in the other. My CAPE Chem grades are not all that great (5 in unit 1 and 3 in unit 2). I migrated and did another undergrad degree (Public Health) in the united states and I graduated with a 4.0 GPA and Distinction. I was just wondering what my chances are of applying to MBBS at UWI. Is it worth applying. Will they give any consideration to my second degree?Thanks!

I am currently in CAPE lower 6. I really want to get into uwi mbbs. I chose to do biology, chem, pure maths and com studies. Do you think i stand a better chance if i change from maths to Physics? I got 1s in both of them; however, i am stronger in maths. I am being told that its better to have all 3 sciences as opposed to bio, chem and maths. What would you recommend?
Also, due to Covid, I was unable to volunteer at the hospital as i was planning to do.i was reeeaallyy looking forward to it. I dont really have anything to show of my voluntary service other than what was required for cxc. I am PRO or the Science Club and ISCF. I am also a deputy prefect.
